Simon Sinek presented a speech about leadership and what it means to him. Within the speech, mentioned five points: 1) How and when to seize an opportunity; 2) Tell the truth; 3) Ask for and accept help; 4) Take the risk to trust people; 5) Remember who you are. These are all excellent points and he elaborates on each of them well- providing a story for each one. The two I like the most is How & when to seize an opportunity and Ask for and accept help.
Sinek opens his five points on how and when to seize an opportunity. This is one that I can relate to heavy, as I’m a naturally shy person. Although I’ve been in multiple positions/jobs where I had to express myself in public settings, if I don’t have to talk or bring attention to myself- I won’t. Because I don’t enjoy bringing attention to myself, I have certainly missed out on opportunities. They all range from talking/asking girls out to denying and not giving myself a chance to apply for certain positions at school. The point Sinek made when he said people either see what they want or see what’s preventing them to get what they want really resonated and makes me want to see things as the former- see what they want.
The other point I liked the most would be to ask for & accept help. This is something I learned a lot myself this school year. I’m the oldest of three, coming from a foreign household, who’s a first generation college student. There’s a lot of pressure on me to succeed and often times, I leaned on myself to get through classes, and personal issues I was experiencing. I quickly learned that junior year is a real challenge and I soon began struggling academically, mentally and in other aspects of my life. I reached a breaking point in November and finally approached my supervisor to get help. We were able to get me into the counseling center on campus and set up an appointment with the student success office as well. I soon got things together and I’m carrying over better practices for this semester.
